Harrier Attack!

aka: Bombedero, Harrier Attack!: Superb Air Combat Action
Moby ID: 14998
ZX Spectrum Specs

Description official description

Harrier Attack is viewed from the side, and instantly resembles titles such as Wings of Fury and Jetstrike. You're on board of a Harrier and must reach the enemy island, destroying planes and ground installations as you go, then destroy their base and fly back to yours. Your Harrier is armed with both bombs and a gun. You must be careful not to fly at full speed throughout your journey as fuel is limited. There are 5 difficulty levels - the latter ones increase the volume and pace of the enemy, and add more mountains to avoid. The difficulty level also affects how quickly enemy aircraft appear on your radar.

Wings of Fury's predecessor

The Good
If I remember correctly, you could play endlessly if you were good enough. Start from your carrier, fight enemy planes, dodge their rockets, bomb the hell out of enemy towns whilst evading anti-aircraft fire, return to the carrier, refuel.. and on we go! And it got faster every round, making it a greater challenge every time. Me and my mate kept competing who could do more rounds without getting downed. Plus, it had its own charm due to its black/white graphics.

The Bad
If you accidentally dropped a single bomb on your own carrier (just hit space), the carrier would be gone the next time you return, so you ran out of fuel. A bit unforgiving.

The Bottom Line
Side-scrolling shooter without too many enemies. When an enemy plane shows up, wait until it fired and dodge the rocket (or shoot it with your own rocket, but keep in mind you have only limited ammo) which became increasingly difficult as speed increased, then shoot it down yourself. The clouds can be a bit irritating, better keep out of them completely. At some point buildings show up and you need to drop your limited amount of bombs on them - no enemy planes attack during the bombing, but flak cannons fire at the sky.. it is difficult to hit targets from far above where the flaks cannot reach you, so if you want to score high you need to fly low, taking the risk.. if you make it out alive, return to the carrier and start over!
