William Wilkie Collins (1824-1889) was an English writer famous for his crime novels. As a protegé of Charles Dickens, his work was initially published in serialized form on Dickens' All the Year Around magazine. He is considered one of the precursors of the genre, laying the way for Arthur Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie and other authors of detective fiction. His most famous works are The Woman in White (1859), No Name (1862), Armadale (1866) and The Moonstone (1868).
