Mary Margaret began her career in entertainment software at Origin Systems, where she created the company’s Human Resources department. She shepherded the development of a software trading system with other companies, put together a company library and spearheaded a technical training program. While at Origin, she also worked on Ultima 7, Serpent Isle and had her memorable scream captured for the intro to Ultima Underworld as Princess Ariel.
Mary Margaret moved on to The 3DO Company, joining prior to the company’s initial public offering. At 3DO, she was responsible for putting more than 200 employees through the hiring process. Mary Margaret managed the milestones and development process of all title projects in production, creating software for a CD-based gaming platform that pre-dated the PlayStation. Additionally, she created and managed the company’s product testing department.
After four years at 3DO, Mary Margaret decided to follow her passion for helping people find jobs and became a professional recruiter. She has been recruiting since 1996. She maintains her ties to the development area by consulting with various startups, including Wild Tangent founded by Alex St. John (formerly of Microsoft) and Tornado Alley founded by Mike McShaffry (formerly of Origin Systems).
Mary Margaret is a regular speaker at the E3 Expo and Game Developer’s Conference, and is the author and co-author of numerous trade industry articles. Mary Margaret was a contributing author to Ernest Adams’ popular trade book, Break Into The Game Industry: How to Get a Job Making Video Games.
Mary Margaret is a founding member of the Independent Game Developer’s Association, formerly known as the Computer Game Developers Association. She joined as the fifteenth member in 1992. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Texas Christian University and a Masters of Business Administration from Sacred Heart University. She is currently based in London, England, with her husband, Andrew.
