Overview edit · view history

Katana Games is a game development company based in Zaragoze, Spain. It uses the trading name KatGames and previously also Xpiral.

In 1994 a group of friends started the development of a game called Vital Light for the Amiga 500 from their homes. Once the game was almost finished a publisher for it was found: Millennium Interactive.

Later in 1995 after publishing another title called Under Pressure with Rocket Science, those friends present a project of a "game development company" to the contest "Idea 95" organized by the CEEI-Aragon. The project won the first prize of the company section contest, this meant a great push for Efecto Caos S.L. (the project in question) and the group of friends' initiative was suddenly transformed into an actual company's project with good expectation and fully professional views.

The name Chaos Effect (Efecto Caos in Spain) was not usable in the USA (the name was registered already) so it was decided to change the trademark denomination to Xpiral (a name more straight and easy to use regardless of language). This new name was inspired by the very first company logo, (the spiral of chaos "eating" a gamer).

After 4 years staying in the "innovative companies incubator" (CEEI's bussiness center) Xpiral had to fly away and move to the center of Zaragoza, Spain in a more convenient place for its activities.

Trivia +

Their first choice for company name was "Efecto Caos", or "Chaos Effect". Unfortunately, that name is taken in the US. So they chose Xpiral, which is based on one of their earlier logos, where the spiral of chaos is eating a gamer.
