While the graphics aren't spectacular, they are very atmospheric with their drab colours and shadows; and keep in mind the blood, sweat and tears which programmers Arc have put into Crackdown by, among other things, achieving the impossible and successfully transferring the coin-op's split screen to the 64. A fine start to US Gold's new decade and a treat for gamers everywhere.

US Gold claim that Crackdown is arcade perfect - and who'd argue when looking at the ST version, even the arcade intro scene has been included. The sprites are very detailed, especially the numerous backdrops. Sound is a mixture of pleasant tunes and arcade effects. So don't waste anymore dosh on the arcade version, this is the biz!

Two players can team up in this cracking blast. Detailed graphics, thumping sound and very addictive gameplay combine to make this a damn fine game.

Crack Down only really merits marks on the little things which only the coin-op aficionados will notice. The animation when the bombs are put in place and the end-of-level explosions are missing - but they're not really missed. All in all, a crack-er!

Monochromatic sprites around (no surprise), but the Speccy version is just as playable as the other versions reviewed. In all, Crackdown is excellent.

On the C64, Andy and Ben are blocky, but they manage to cause enough trouble for the attacking drones. My only slight moan is the fact that in group of drones your character is almost invisible.

Crackdown was a fun coin-op to play, and more than reminiscent of the Gauntlet series. The Megadrive version retains almost all of the arcade's playability, but with slightly smaller graphics - hardly surprising, considering the size of the coin-op's screen! The sound is good, and fits the bill nicely - lots of explosions and the like. If you enjoyed the coin-op, you'll certainly enjoy this, so go forth now and purchase it pronto.

Reminiscent of both Gauntlet and Zybots, Crack Down is easy to pick up and playable – particularly in the two player mode. Fun sound too – grab a friend and give it a try.

The strongest element of Crack Down is its two-player option, which splits the screen and makes full use of the play area. Here you can have some real fun as both players combine their attack on Mr X's city. Even better is the options screen which allows you to give yourself nine lives and six continues. (I'm just an old cheat at heart.) Very old, but all the crucial elements are still there.

A bit of a change of pace, this one. Very much along the lines of Alien Syndrome or the more recent Xybots, its thrills don't come from spectacular sound or graphics, but from its Gauntlet-esque game play.

The first noticeable flaw about Crackdown is that it won't run on my CPC PLUS, but will work on a bog standard CPC. However, it was programmed pre-PLUS and can't be really be blamed for Amstrad's quirks. (...) There's just not enough in this game to warrant a higher rating, but it's not bad if you're a fan of these blaster types.

What else is there to say? The presentation is weaker (I do miss that cool arcade intro!), and the visuals and sound aren't the best. In fact, the sound is downright bad. The gameplay - what really matters - is rock solid, and playing with a buddy makes a massive difference. There's some great fun to be had here friends, so find yourself a copy and get cracking!

Considering the time of release, Crack Down is a fun, strangely addictive game that combines some strategy along with the action. Each level becomes more difficult than the last, with an increasing variety of enemies and dangers such as bottomless pits or acid pools. The fact that you must often avoid the enemy is a refreshing change of pace from the mindless shooting in similar action titles.

There's the kernel of a good idea in here, and the focus on sneaking probably seemed fairly clever and groundbreaking at the time (assuming you hadn't played the Metal Gear games) but today it feels too clunky and fiddly and the meagre gameplay amusement on offer isn't enough to compensate. As always, the option for two player co-op offers some giggles, but its still way overpriced for what it is.

I appreciate how different Crack Down is. If nothing else, it’s not a shoot-em-up. Thank God! Still, there’s a tension in its gameplay that keeps me from loving it more. I see the game’s arcade leanings in the one-hit deaths, relatively short levels, and lack of objectives. The fact that you’re forced to approach each level strategically, however, lends it more of a sit-down, console feel. I really wished the game would have embraced a more straightforward shooter style or added more objectives to lend it some extra substance. As it stands, Crack Down remains an interesting experiment, but I understand why Sega’s allowed it to languish in obscurity.

Set the bombs and get the hell out of there

The Good
At the beginning of the 21st century, Mr. K builds an army of androids that will take over the world, and two secret service agents called Ben and Andy are called in to destroy the enemy facilities using a special type of time bomb. Crack Down is a 1-2 player action game that uses a top-down perspective.

The game is faithful to the coin-op version. You control Ben (or Andy in two player mode) as you attempt to set the detonators on the areas marked on the map. You use the map to help you locate these areas. After you do that, you then get the hell out of there. The good thing about this game is shooting the androids that get in your way using machine guns, cannons, and super bombs. You can switch between these weapons at any time during the game. Unless the game is played with two players, the right side of the screen lists the enemies in the level, as well as the weapons they use. As well as enemies, you will be faced with conveyor belts and several dangers such as laser barriers and pools of acid.

Crack Down starts out with an introduction in which the two men places a bomb near a gate to blow it up, and cut-scenes during the game show Ben and Andy making their way to Mr. K's headquarters. These cut-scenes are viewed after every fourth level. The animation of the characters and enemies are good. Both Ben and Andy, as well as the enemies, look different so that you can tell them apart. The music in the game is catchy, and the sound effects are appropriate to the actions you take.

The Bad
Compared to other ports of the game, the characters are really small. As well as this, the graphics and in-game map don't look as detailed.

The Bottom Line
In Crack Down, the objective is to set bombs that are marked on the map, then get out before the facility explodes. There is a lot more features in the Genesis version than in other ports. This includes the addition of the introduction and cut-scenes, as well as a display telling you the enemies in the level, and the weapons that they are carrying. In my opinion, the Genesis version is a decent port as it comes as close to the coin-op version as possible.

Good fun but too short

The Good
This is a top down arcade game which is good fun for one or two players. Players have to maneuver their characters through a maze like environment, sneaking by enemies or try to blast their way through. There is a time limit for each level and you need to set bombs at specific spots. After all bombs are set, players must make their way to the exit before the time is up. The various enemies are quite amusing, and the environment offers some interesting challenges.

The Bad
The game is too short. The graphics are too small. The game is relatively easy to beat.

The Bottom Line
A short arcade adventure good enough to rent for a weekend.
