Again, this opens up new possibilities for exploration. I can't say enough about this game, it's just that good. Plus if you get the Millenium Edition, it comes complete with a special edition Lara comic, pewter figurine and collector's card. No true TR fan should be without it. Love it or hate it, Tomb Raider is here to stay.

I have since played most of the other Tomb Raider games on PC. TR2 is much more a straight shooter than an adventure, but that aside, the first few beginning and last few ending levels really ignite. Its expansion pack, TR2 Gold, sparkles as well. TR3 Gold: Lost Artifact, however, was on the vanilla side. Most vanilla was TR5: Chronicles, with the exception of the three "Black Isle" levels in Ireland, which are classic, mythical, creepy, and unique, featuring an unarmed, childhood-aged Lara ... My favorite all in all would still have to be TR4, though! I give it a gold star and highly recommend it if you can stand being chased by flying fire demons, mummies, skeletons, ghostly tin men on horseback, and ancient raging bulls, or ... even if you can't!

Setting the game almost entirely in Egypt is smart. Lara looks far more at home in dark and dingy tombs than in hi-tech underground bases. The series has finally got a decent baddie too: Von Croy will have you guessing his allegiance until the very end. But the greatest addition is pace. The Tomb Raider games have always been a bit slow in the past. Now key events mean Lara will have to stay on her toes in some levels as she's chased through sections. Get it. If you've never ventured into tombs with Lara, this is the one to discover what you've been missing.

The Last Revelation goes back to it's roots for a feast of varied puzzles, but moves forward in terms of graphical quality. The fact that there is less action in between the puzzles doesn't make the gameplay boring. In fact it has the opposite effect. It actually generates an unsettling trepidation as to when and where you will be attacked. Fear is a powerful weapon. There will always be a few groans and grumbles but lining up TR4 against some of the other dross I have had to endure over the past twelve months bares no comparison. If you didn't enjoy the last 3 Tomb Raider adventures then stay well clear of Lara's latest quest. For the millions of others I say this is the best yet. Go get some!

All told, I had a great time playing The Last Revelation, with the exceptions I listed above. In fact, I enjoyed it so much that I've purchased the first two games in the series (for the Playstation, though--hopefully I'll be able to deal with the controls a bit more intuitively that way). There's a minor amount of violence in this game--nothing much worse than what's on Saturday morning cartoons these days, so it's appropriate for most kids over age ten.

Immersive graphics, solid sound and fully interactive gameplay make Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation a delight, pure and simple. The controls are easy to grasp and use, and can be configured for keyboard or joystick. The program demands that gamers think, not just react. There are more puzzles to solve, seemingly more enemies to outwit, and, of course, Set to defeat. Tomb Raider was one of the first titles to feature a female hero, who could adventure and shoot with the best of them. It has attracted an almost-fanatical following. In spite of that, this is a title that will appeal to the role-playing adventurer for its sheer entertainment value.

The original Tomb Raider was ground-breaking enough to warrant a massive Classic score, but I would argue that, in retrospect, neither TRII nor III deserve that status. It's not that they're bad games, it's just that they don't provide the amazing experience a Classic award warrants. And, frankly, neither does The Last Revelation. It would have to go far beyond a platform adventure and become something that defied categories; it would have to draw us into the story to the point where we'd forget we were playing a game. By its very nature, Tomb Raider can't do either of those things. If you enjoyed any of the other titles, The Last Revelation will blow your socks clean off. Just don't expect any miraculous changes if you never liked it in the first place.

For those who have never played TR before, The Last Revelation will be a unique and entertaining experience. If you have played TR before, and have had your fill, The Last Revelation will not offer you anything you haven't really seen before. Sure, there are new levels to explore, vehicles to drive, and character moves, but overall it is nothing new. Meaning no disrespect to Lara enthusiasts, but TR4 truly is the same formula we've seen three times before. However, die hard fans such as myself will enjoy this newest installment in the series for the same reasons we always have: an interesting, sassy, intelligent lead character, great gameplay, nice graphics, and some mind flexing puzzles mixed in along the way. TR is still the best game of this type out there.

Even if The Last Revelation doesn't have the overall "wow" impact of the original Tomb Raider, it's in every respect a better game, with significant improvements in storyline and level design. In fact, if it weren't for a few bug-related and game-balancing issues, this would be one of the better games of the year. As is customary to this series, Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation is an excellent blend of action, adventure and story. The characters are well designed and acted out (Werner Von Croy makes a tremendous adversary), and the levels are a blast to explore. Even if there were no scorpions or skeletons (skeletons rock!) to kill, exploring the tombs would still be more entertaining than many games currently on the market. No, you just can't go wrong with any of the Tomb Raider games, and the Last Revelation is certainly no exception to that rule.

It seems that the designers at Core finally listened to all the com plaints about the various TOMB RAIDER games and put out a game that finally does the series some justice. They went back to what made the first one good — elegant level design, a continuous sense of discovery, and a mood that strikes a perfect balance between tension and satisfaction. If you’re like me and were enraptured by the first game in the series, but consistently disappointed by the sequels, then THE LAST REVELATION will revive your faith. The Last Revelation starts and finishes strong. If you can manage to last through the exceedingly dull and repetitive middle sequences in the game, you’ll be well rewarded come the climax. The Last Revelation is by far the best in the Tomb Raider series. It doesn’t quite offer the impact that the original had, but that’s a given. What it does have is a great story, some excellent puzzles, smooth visuals, and a level of detail unseen in previous Tomb Raider adventures.

The title seems to indicate a finale of sorts, but is Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation the last end of Lara’s adventures? Somehow I doubt that, as Eidos and Core would be foolish to give up this cash cow. As most of you have probably heard, there is currently a live-action movie featuring Lara in the works, and you can bet there is yet another sequel being planned as you read this. Hopefully, the title means that this will be the last time we see the venerable Tomb Raider engine used, modified or not. It is beginning to show its age, and it appears that it is impossible to avoid some clipping as it now stands. This is the best game in the series since the first one, and gives even it a run for its money in all areas except for concept. We’ve been there, and done that, but never in such a beautiful environment. TR4 is a welcome return to Lara’s roots, and a promise that we can hope for more and better improvements in the future.

Ultimately, Tomb Raider IV would have made a brilliant Tomb Raider II. The changes are great, but should have been made years ago. They are less impressive now that the basic play mechanics are so familiar. Fans who want one more spelunking adventure will be pleased that this is far and away the best of the sequels. Those of us who hoped our favorite gaming girlfriend would evolve into something better will be disappointed again, only less so this year than in the past. Core has breathed just enough new life into the old girl to make it worth one more go. But, we're warning you, Lara: We're not going to fall for this little game of yours again. At the end of the day, do you want us to be brutally honest? Well, okay. Despite looking absolutely spanking gorgeous, running smoother than a greased Linford Christie and having more levels than the world’s biggest multistorey car park, Last Revelation is NOT the best Tomb Raider ever. Gasp. Didn’t think we were going to say that, did you? No matter what is done to the game, nothing will EVER surpass the excellence of Ms Croft’s very first adventure and that’s a fact, Jack. Still, you can’t actually play it on the Dreamcast so that sort of knocks that one on the head. Saying that though, Last Revelation does come an incredibly close second in the title race for ‘Best Tomb Raider Game’. Virtually all the problems we’ve ever had with Tomb Raider have been ironed out over the years, making the Dreamcast version practically a musthave purchase for both fans of the genre and first-time players alike.

Well, it took three sequels, but Eidos and Core have finally got the formula right again. The Tomb Raider series has finally returned to the glory that was first uncovered in the first game. Core’s formula has remained unchanged since the first title in 1996, and the graphics engine and movement and control mechanics should have been buried in a time capsule after the first sequel. Yet Core Design has done a good job of focusing on the things that constitute a solid Lara Croft adventure–interesting locations, a decent plot, some memorable puzzles, well-designed levels that challenge without being frustrating, and light smatterings of combat. Although all the foibles for which the series is infamous, including the errant third-person camera and horrendous clipping problems, are still present, the game is a fun one-time romp. Some of the puzzles are downright unfair and the implementation of ropes could have been better, but these shortcomings are balanced out with a host of entertaining touches. Eidos and Core has proven themselves to be raiders of the lost art of adventure with the best Tomb Raider sequel to date.

Yes, it's as good as the first one, but even so, if this was Tomb Raider 2 instead of 4, it would still be criticized for bringing nothing new to the table. And years after the fact? It's just unacceptable. There's a reason why the Core team can release a new TR game ever year on the dot, while other companies struggle to stick to release dates -- they don't spend very much time on design. Though levels have some new tricks in every iteration, they still rely on a massive amount of recycled material in order to keep the game alive, and for those of us that used to have an active interest in the series, it has done nothing but ruin any respect that Tomb Raider used to garner. If you've never, ever -- not once, not even for a second, played Tomb Raider, than this should be the one to start with.

tThey say the third time's a charm in most cases. With each of the first three Tomb Raider episodes, released one year after another, there were incremental improvements (some would call them innovations) added to entice gamers to come back. But who's kidding who? The reason most gamers came back, aside from a secret, archaeological desire to spelunk, was to lead buxom Lara through a never-ending series of catacombs and labyrinths. That's not to detract from the often near-genius level design, displayed in abundance in the seminal "part two." Unfortunately, Eidos is all too well aware of its greatest asset, but now that we've progressed beyond the difficult part one, the deviously designed part two, and the more-of-the-same-but-look-at-Lara's-two-new-moves part three, what exactly is there to bring us back to the unofficial part four, The Last Revelation?

While Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation is an acceptable game based on its own merits and set against its own legacy, it is for all intents and purposes indistinguishable from the games that came before it. It reeks of a ready-to-go game engine and a level designer going through the motions, while someone else comes up with a new move for Lara. Teetering on the brink, Eidos' premier franchise is one step away from being bludgeoned into complacency. As it stands, Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation reeks of a heartless cash-in and the game, for lack of a better term, simply has no soul.

Chances are you have heard about and played the Tomb Raider series before. It all comes down to one of three things: if you enjoyed Tomb Raider before, you'll like this; if you didn't like Tomb Raider before, you're definitely not going to enjoy this latest incarnation. If you have never tried out Tomb Raider before, however, this is a good version of the game to take Lara around for a spin.

Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation represents a continuing effort by Eidos to confuse the hell out of me. Are they committed to producing quality Dreamcast titles like Soul Reaver and Sword of the Berserk? Or are they content to directly port 32-bit Playstation games to the Dreamcast with little or no improvements, like Fighting Force 2 and Tomb Raider? Either way, The Last Revelation is a lesson in mediocrity.

One final plea: Please fix this game! We still want Lara, just not in the same game we've been playing for four years. Despite what the title may indicate, we are certain there will be another game next year. There are there are three things you can count on in this life: Death, taxes, and Tomb Raider. TR is the lesser of these evils. Barely.

In the end, there's definitely not enough 'revelation' to be had, graphically or gameplay- wise. While fans of Lara's earlier adventures will be able to over- look these shortcomings to partake in all the joys of running, jumping, crawling and shooting, you can't help feeling that this is merely a 'rinse and repeat' for Eidos and Core. What would we do? Opt to rent. TR is worth a look— but look twice before you make an investment.

Czwarta część serii o Larze nie przyciągnęłaby nikogo mimo niskiej ceny, gdyby nie to, że najnowsza gra z panną Croft, Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness jest przeciętna, i ma te same wady co The Last Revelation. A skoro firma Core Design w ciągu pięciu lat poprawiła tylko grafikę, The last Revelation pozostaje pozycją do rozważenia - głównie dla tych, którzy lubią zręcznościową rozgrywkę polegającą na skakaniu, wspinaniu się i bieganiu po antycznych grobowcach.

I'll close with this: There are so many better places you could be putting your money that I cannot stress enough that this game simply is not worth your time. Even if you liked the rest of the series, I am here to tell you that there is a better life out there -- just look at Eidos' own efforts like Soul Reaver and SotB. Unless you actively try to avoid this sort of rubbish, it will continue to plague our industry, and I for one have had enough. Go out and buy it if you've got some odd obsession with making Eidos rich via your frustration, but if you want to have fun, go pick up a real game like Kain, MDK2 or Rayman 2. This is just painful.

You'll experience some tense moments during your adventure, but Last Revelation is rarely fun. I enjoyed the jeep driving sequences, but only because I was able to run people over. Does that make me a sociopath? You can save your progress at any time, but there are no checkpoints, and it's easy to forget to save. Rest assured you'll remember the instant after an untimely impalement (as if there was another kind). Last Revelation contains one huge glitch that proves to be the nail in the coffin. In the Valley of Kings level, if you don't take the jeep with you to a certain location, you become hopelessly stuck. Clearly Eidos was just going through the motions with Last Revelation, so it's no surprise that Tomb Raider's popularity went into free-fall mode after this.

The best Tomb Raider game in history!

The Good
I loved the further improvements to the graphics in the game. Very beautiful. For the first time you can see the clouds on the sky moving. The various sounds in the background are stunningly beautiful to listen to. Another great thing about this game are the little movies in the middle of a level. Not to mention the story. Fantastic! Wonderfully crafted. It is almost like it has happened in real life.

The Bad
There is not much to say here. The only thing that I can think of is that the animals and people that you have killed disappear after a few seconds. There wasn't many weapons here like it was in the previous games. The urban levels can be very confusing at times.

The Bottom Line
A little bit easier than Tomb Raider 3, but much better. Everybody should by this game.

The Last Revelation elevates its predecessors by channelling Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver

The Good
By the late nineties, Eidos Interactive had just deployed Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, which had nearly put Tomb Raider to shame. Thus, Jeremy Heath-Smith and his brother Adrian at Core Design had already hired a new team to reassemble their outdated Room Editor and replicate the competition. As a result, Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation was released just several months later and is most notable for its peculiar level design.

Core Design challenged the formula by using inspiration from Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver. The Last Revelation is set exclusively in Egypt via traversal hubs implemented into their Room Editor. That means Croft must backtrack to levels already visited and solve the bigger puzzle. This poses new threats, as the A.I. is tweaked so that skeletons à la Army of Darkness and ninjas straight out of Raiders of the Lost Ark can mimic most of Croft’s moves. Core Design introduced a rope swinging mechanic, that you might remember from Pitfall on the Atari 2600. Players will find themselves at home with The Last Revelation by shooting down even more crocodiles, but this time at The Temple of Karnak near the Nile River. Later in the game, Croft visits Cairo during toxin-like overcast sky in perhaps the most menacing set of levels by artist Andy Sandham. Thankfully, Croft sports a R75 to speed through an Armageddon, but sadly without Sean Connery in the sidecar.

For The Last Revelation, Peter Connelly makes his mark on the series with grandiose Egyptian melodies and still alluding to McCree’s playbook. With The Last Revelation proposed as the series finale, Connelly’s main title theme is composed to be melancholic. Much of his score is heavily influenced by The Mummy (1999), which came out the same year as The Last Revelation. Overall, Connelly mimics a variety of exhilarating Egyptian instruments over McCree’s heavy use of choirs, and this is a nice change of pace for Core Design’s fourth Tomb Raider entry.

The Bad
For their fourth Tomb Raider game, Core Design retained the archaic grid system from previous Tomb Raider games to maneuver Croft. In The Last Revelation, players will continuously pull levers, leap over chasms, and move crates as before.

The Bottom Line
The Last Revelation elevates its predecessors by channelling Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver. Core Design had pushed their antiquated Room Editor to its limits in what was supposed to be their last game headlining Tomb Raider.

Improved graphics and animation with an interesting story, but #[email protected]*$& hard puzzles!

The Good
I loved the original Tomb Raider game, but never played II or III, so the graphics jump from 1 to 4 was a nice treat. The lighting effects and graphics in general were very nice, and Lara's polygon count seemed to skyrocket. Unfortunately, her breasts were no longer able to impale people (that's a joke)

Lara journeys back into a tomb in this one, which I heard she wasn't doing in II or III, despite being called "Tomb Raider", and the tombs seem believable enough, with the obligatory undead wandering about.

One of the first levels is a flashback to a young Lara Croft, where she finds her backpack and you get a bit of a glimpse into how she became the famous Tomb Raider.

Fans of the first three should feel at home.

The story was also pretty interesting. Unfortunately, I only got glimpses of the story by wandering through the cinematics, because I couldn't get past the fifth or sixth level...

The Bad
Allright, I didn't actually beat the game. In fact, I didn't get very far. Because the puzzles are HARD! Now, I'm not one who usually says, "this is too hard, I give up," but I just had it with this game. I like difficult puzzles, and I like puzzles which make you use your brain, but I do NOT like puzzles that are so impractical and hidden that your best chance of solving them is by stumbling through them blindly. It seemed every level was filled with five or six "dead ends" which you could only get through if you scrutinized every single inch of the level for any sort of object or switch or ANYTHING that seems just enough out of place that it might be something you need to get out of the place. I, for one, want to be able to play the game and enjoy the scenery without having to stop and record every object and texture to memory before I continue on.

Combat hasn't been improved at all, which is sort of annoying. Firing down at wolves from a wall is fine, but when you had guys shooting back at you with the same accuracy as you have to them, there should be a better way to defend yourself than "hope for the best".

Also, where I eventually got stuck, I spent a month just trying to figure out what to do next, since I'm too stubborn to cheat or look it up on a walkthru. I had encountered a bug the previous level, and carried this sceptre things with me. I think maybe I'd ran into a bug and couldn't progress further. And since I didn't have any backup saves (or maybe I was just too annoyed to go back a level and do that all again) I just had to quit there.

The Bottom Line
Fans of the first three will like this. Graphics have been improved, and the story's pretty interesting. If you like impossible puzzles, this one's for you.
