Description

'Round the Horn puts the player in the role of a clipper's captain. The goal is to race from New York, around South America to San Francisco. Set during the gold rush era of US history the player reenacts the record breaking voyages of the historical ships The Flying Cloud, The Surprise and The Challenge. Picking one of the ships the player must race the other two to San Francisco.

The game shows the map of the Americas and the position of the three ships. Each turn the player must pick a direction to sail in, getting information about the wind (including a visual of the staysail). When close to the coast the player can also spot land which must obviously be avoided. The ship can also run aground on hidden reefs. Aside from the player-chosen direction, the ship's heading is also influenced by the currents in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and winds blowing the ship off course.
