And that’s the thing, Another World, when all’s said and done, is relatively short and can be completed within an hour if you know what you’re doing, but the numerous difficulty spikes will try their damnedest to keep you back. Some may see this as artificially lengthening the game and I’d have trouble contesting that, but Another World is far greater than its unflinching difficulty and three digit death toll. It’s unique, heartfelt, beautiful, intimate, visceral, visionary, understated, inspirational and ultimately timeless. In a world where games provide all sorts of safety nets and prompts to gently nudge the player in the right direction, Another World stands stoic and proud, shamelessly kicking your arse but drawing you in with the promise of what’s around the next corner.

In 1991 I loved Another World and in 2007 I love it just as much. [And there aren't many games you can say that about, 16 years later! Ed]. It's important that we remember computer gaming heritage, just as much as we do with old movies or books. Another World broke the mould back in 1991 and was one of the most innovative games of its time. With the same genres being churned out nowadays - endless FPS and sports titles for example - a little bit of magic, such as Another World, wouldn't go amiss in modern games development. One of the all-time greats and rightly so, this latest release shows that Another World really was well ahead of its time - and whether you're interested in gaming history or not, you simply have to check this out now.

For some it’s a chance for reminiscence, and for others a chance to experience one of the most absorbing adventure games around. Another World offers a glimpse of what gaming life was like back in 1991. It’s available in the shops RRP £14.99, though you can probably find it for £9.99 online - great value for money. Anyone who classes themselves as a true gamer should experience it and modern developers could learn a lot by revisiting the game. Another World shows you can achieve amazing things with a low budget that turn out to be very rewarding experiences.

You can’t go far wrong by getting this; you are in for a treat if you have a desire to experience a re-make of retro-gaming at its finest. You just need to have more than Popcorn gamer’s attention span, no blinkers in regards to graphical quality and a desire to play the game for what it was and not what it could have been if they’d have spent millions remaking it. If you can get past that, then you’re going to have a good time with Another World.

Dżwiękowo Another World jest o dziwo bardzo przyzwoity. Myślę bowiem, że nawet za 10 lat Another World będzie czarował przynajmniej graczy-koneserów.

Unremitting and unkind, Another World constantly serves to remind us of how easy we have it these days. Like so many horror films before it, it might not strictly feel like straightforward fun, but it is undoubtedly an enjoyable experience. Far more like reading a nightmarish novel than playing the latest generic shooter, Another World will not be to everyone's taste, but for those looking for something darker, it is a compelling adventure worth every penny of the budget price tag.

Truth is, I don't think this game is worth one pound for every year it's been in existence - unless perhaps I was richer or so nostalgic that I could do nothing but drink Soda Stream and watch Grange Hill. Only for the oldies this one, and even then only for the oldies with deeper pockets than I.

It's nice to be reminded of the many good things about Another World, but it's quite a harrowing experience in other respects. Smart nostalgics will want to keep their memories untarnished.

Another World ist und bleibt DAS Kultspiel überhaupt.

But not just another game!

The Good
The windows version of Out of This World (Another World if you prefer) released in 2006 is a straightforward remake of the classic 1991 game. The differences between the original version and this one are very insignificant so I'll fill them quickly.
The graphics have been slightly updated (they are higher resolution), the menu has been brought to today standards, and the checkpoints are saved and can be restored without needing to type a password (I assume that method was used the old version). And above all, now the game is fully Windows XP compatible (and most likely Vista also). Nothing has been changed, only updated, and as a remake this edition of Another World is as good as it could get.
Enough about the remake, let's talk about the game itself. Another World is a truly unique and brilliant game, Eric Chahi did a great job making a solid game almost entirely by himself. The gameplay elements form different genres. It plays like a side-scroller, but the main purpose of the game is solving the puzzles like in an adventure game. The cut scenes are very well tied in the game, sometimes the transition is so fluid that you may not realize when you get the control on the character. Another amazing fact is that the game requires only five buttons, and four of them are the arrow keys. Those are the buttons that will serve not only the side scrolling part, but also in some different situations, like balancing with a suspended cage in order to loose the chain that ties it, and there are other moments but I won't spoil them.
The Bad
It tries to be original at any cost, and sometimes ignores the consequences. It's quite short and linear, and it's not the type of game you'd want to finish more than once, because the main attraction is discovering the story, the gameplay isn't to rewarding on it's own. In fact is rather demanding because it requires both quick reflexes, and some heavy thinking. You have only a way to bypass a situation and you have to get through all the wrong ways until you find the right one. This involves a lot of dieing and trying, and is the most frustrating aspect of the game.
The Bottom Line
It draws some of its inspiration from the good old Prince of Persia but this inspiration resembles to some gameplay mechanics. Anything else is completely out of this world.

Average platformer, but great cut-scenes
by Andrew Fisher (706)
The Good
The bleak colour theme and music, even when Lester is in his laboratory in our own world. So I understand, Eric Chahi was playing the Amiga port of Dragon's Lair and got the idea for Another World. Dragon's Lair had cartoon death-scene cuts of course, but cartoonish as they were, I think there was something quite serious and effecting about them. Another World has some very effecting death scenes and other cut scenes. I also like that you're playing a character who is perhaps a bit of a loner, a science geek immersed in his experiments. He's forced into a world where he's even more alone, but forms a strange friendship with an alien rebel. The story of their friendship is mostly told through the graphics and gameplay, being there for one another in the other's time of need. I thought the ending suited the overall mood of the game too.
The Bad
As a platformer and problem-solver it's a pretty average game and there are some unimpressive puzzles that still take a lot of effort to solve.
The Bottom Line
Worth playing through to the end, for the story.
