Description

Eamon was one of the earliest role-playing games available for the Apple II. It was also perhaps the first ever adventure game construction set. The game was public domain, so it was mainly distributed in Apple user groups and by trading with friends.

The main game consists of the Eamon Master disk, which has the Main Hall and a short adventure called the Beginner's Cave. You start the game in the Main Hall, where you create a new character or select an old character. You are able to buy weapons, spells, and armor and go on your adventure. Weapons come in five different types: Axe, Bow, Mace, Spear, and Sword. There are three types of armor: Leather, Chain, and Plate. There are also several spells: Blast, a damage spell; Power, which has random effects, Heal, which cures you; and Speed, which increases your chance to hit.

Character development is fairly simple. Your character starts with random stats in three categories: Hardiness (how much you can carry and the amount of damage you can take), Agility (How good you are in combat) and Charisma (Affects the costs of items in the store and the friendliness of monsters). You also has percentage ratings for each of the weapon types that determine, along with the armor penalty, whether you can hit or not. These percentage ratings have a chance of going up every time you hit a monster with that type of weapon.

The game is entirely text-based, though the construction set allows the addition of graphics. You interact with the environment typing simple one or two-word game commands such as ATTACK RAT, INVENTORY, or NORTH. There is no option to save your game, so death is often quick, sudden, and final.

An excellent adventure game

The Good
Many of the authors created extensive worlds in which you could visualize your surrounding environment. Also, Eamon's best feature was that anyone could write an adventure for it. Eamon remains an excellent tool for teaching BASIC programming to newcomers. On top of that, the adventures were usually fun and let the player "explore the world" in a safe way.

The Bad
Although many adventures were excellent, too many of them fell short of the mark. Because anyone could program, you frequently had games written by people who just wanted to make a game, but didn't always include something special with it. For instance, some games have extensive use of magical items or companions which actually did things. Others would be a hum-drum "hack-n-slash" adventure where you just wonder through the maze picking up treasure and trying to find an exit.

The Bottom Line
Eamon is a text based role playing game which allows a player to develop his character over the course of many different adventures. Thus, the experience, weapons, and gold earned in one adventure could be used in another adventure.

Trivia

1001 Video Games

The Apple II version of Eamon appears in the book 1001 Video Games You Must Play Before You Die by General Editor Tony Mott.

Code

Since Eamon and all of its modules were written in Applesoft BASIC, you could easily find all the secrets to the game by listing out the code and examining it for secret rooms or surprises. You could also use the Dungeon Designer disk to list out all the rooms and monsters for a dungeon.

You could also modify your character's stats by changing a few lines in the adventure code if you wanted a super character.

DOS version

The DOS conversion of Eamon was released in four parts (all in 1988):

  • Eamon Adventure Disk 1 - The Main Hall
  • Eamon Adventure Disk 2 - The Ice Cave
  • Eamon Adventure Disk 3 - Assault on the Clone Master
  • Eamon Adventure Disk 4 - Quest For Trezore
