Fun and original gameplay but, oh my goodness, what a short and easy game. Rensch (218) 3.75 Stars3.75 Stars3.75 Stars3.75 Stars3.75 Stars

Kirby's Dream Land will make your Game Boy dreams come true with great graphics, a fresh gameplay concept, and hours of fun. Suck it up and take on this adventure! It'll blow you away.

In summary, this is the Gameboy game that started Kirby’s journey – its a charming and accessible 2D platformer with great graphics, a fun soundtrack, and a decent level of difficulty that gets extended quite a bit with the hidden hard mode. There are other Kirby games that are much better – including its sequel – but for this one I give it a final score of 8/10.

I admit that I’m not the most unbiased observer when it comes to Kirby, as he’s one of my favorite video game characters of all time and I find pretty much all of his games quite enjoyable, but I think Kirby’s Dream Land acquits itself nicely even if it is your first exposure to the franchise. It’s fun to look at, fun to play, and while the challenge of the first game isn’t exactly intense, it is a good intro to gaming for someone who doesn’t have much experience with video games, and the second round is a lot more the proper speed for most players. While Kirby may not have reached the apex of his powers here, Kirby’s Dream Land is still a quality Game Boy title and worth a play to see where the trail of blood Kirby leaves in his wake began.

Kirby's Dream Land is a beautifully crafted game and everything about it just screams quality. There's no doubting that it's too short an adventure but HAL did a fantastic job in getting many of the core mechanics down for this debut and they created a solid platform title that still plays well today.
All in all, Kirby's Dreamland is a great game for beginner players and ones that enjoy a fun, but short, experience.

There's quite a bit to see in this little cart. Younger gamers, who are looking for something to do while they're sitting in the backseat waiting to get to Disneyland, will lap Kirby's Dream Land up. Older gamers, looking for some quick fun before the boss gets into work, will find it a drag that they can't save their progress and are forced to see the same levels again and again.
Nintendo Life (Aug 03, 2009)
Kirby’s Dream Land may be almost legal, but the pink puff’s debut adventure feels a bit too elementary now. 17 years of nostalgia shines bright upon Kirby, but lowering those rosey glasses reveals a walk-in-the-park title that has been outpaced by its descendants in virtually every way. It’s still worth digging up if you’ve never played it, and even more so if you’ve beat it a million times. Kirby’s genesis is strong, but he’s done better.
Aimed squarely at a younger audience, Kirby's Dream Land still manages to provide a fulfilling, though less challenging gaming experience to older players. Though not worth the price to an older gamer when it was new, it should not be overlooked at a thrift store, flea market, or second hand gaming shop.

The Game Hoard (Dec 01, 2018)
Kirby’s Dream Land is designed so that any kind of player can enjoy it, and that ethos is mostly to its benefit. It’s a charming and friendly title visually, musically, and in design, making it easier for experienced players to breeze through it because of its low difficulty level that was designed to bring in inexperienced gamers. Sucking up and spitting out enemies and objects works well even if it’s incredibly straightforward, but the simplicity of the affair is offset by its short length. It’s hard to hold its basic design against it too much when it can be beat in less than an hour without anything to really bother you along the way. Minimal complexity means it casts a wide net to catch many types of players, appealing to many even though its gameplay isn’t really fleshed out or challenging.
HonestGamers (Feb 21, 2008)
The short amount of time I spent with that “bonus quest” almost made playing Kirby’s Dream Land worth it. Almost. That quest doesn’t take away from the fact this game is extremely short, with four stages of intermediate length and one extended boss gauntlet. It also didn’t make me forget that this early version of Kirby was a pretty generic hero with none of the sweet powers he’d later gain. While future games were loaded with cool abilities and many diverse worlds to get through, the series’ originator just doesn’t pack the punch to make much of an impact.
