GameFan Magazine (Jul, 1995)
Visually, Clockwork Knight is outstanding. Between the line-scrolling texture mapped polygon playfields and the gnarly, multi-jointed bosses. Clockwork is absolute eye candy. Problems arise, however, when the shallow gameplay, limited play mechanics and the "is that all there is" overall game length becomes apparent. As a first generation Saturn game, CK is a technical and visual achievement. CK is not a bad game by any means, but with superior titles like Bug! and Astal literally just around the corner, a game need more gameplay horsepower to even compete.

Okay, we weren't blown away, but we like it. We really like it. Not a reason to get a Saturn, but nice to have if you do.

GamePro (US) (Aug, 1995)
Clockwork is a great-looking game that's too easy. Any replay value is lost on experienced platform gamers. Nonetheless, it's a great showcase for the main Saturn feature that will soon be gracing the video screen.

Welcome to round one of Sega Saturn games. Clockwork Knight must have been in development as the Sega Saturn was being developed because it seems everything the Sega Saturn can do is in this game. The 3-D perspective is practically shoved down your throat: There are enough colors here to blind you for life and the control could use some tightening. The game gets repetitive almost immediately, but at least there are some secret areas to check.

Clockwork Knight is kind of like a super-model: gorgeous on the outside, but a bit absent on the inside. But hey, I like a little bit of empty beauty every once in a while. Sue me.

Defunct Games (Oct 22, 2005)
Not to be confused the classic Kubrick film, this one is about a wind-up toy knight who goes on a quest to save the toy princess. A quirky hero on a quest to save a princess? Yeah, I know. But, regardless, this game isn't too bad. It isn't too great, but it isn't too bad.

Coming Soon Magazine (Sep 27, 1995)
With Clockwork Knight, the first platform game for the Sega Saturn, Sega clearly shows what kind of power their new console can deliver, but fails partially when it comes to what excitement is all about.

Mean Machines (Oct, 1995)
A limited, kiddy platformer that doesn't even look so good now.

CD Player (1996)

IGN (Feb 13, 2008)
Clockwork Knight is a classic launch title. It's gussied up with features that capitalize on a new system's power, such as polygons or CD-quality audio. But at its core, Clockwork Knight is just a base-level platform that skates too long on the charms of its hero, Pepper. I do hope that the Saturn is resurrected somehow on the current console, maybe on the Virtual Console or the Xbox Live Arcade, but if Pepper is called back into service, his sequel is the one that should be enlisted.

Game Players (Aug, 1995)
Still, this isn't a bad game. The action, while uninspired, is solid throughout. Each level offers a good supply of challenges and some of the bosses are pretty cool. This is the perfect game for younger players or gamers who enjoy simple back-to-basics gaming. But ultimately, most will find Clockwork Knight a mediocre time-waster at best.

Entertainment Weekly (Jun 09, 1995)
When you first enter the whimsical world of Clockwork Knight, you begin to see just how remarkably the Saturn's extra power can enhance a videogame fantasy. As a toy knight roaming through the magical after-hours province of a child's playroom, you're transported to a bright and inviting realm. Unfortunately, the game itself quickly becomes stale and predictable: Jump over obstacles, move to the right, kill some bad guys, move to the right, etc.

MAXIMUM Magazine (Oct, 1995)
Clockwork Knight is a missed opportunity, a crying shame and a waste of money. If Sega can't even match the longevity of their simple Sonic games on their new CD based machine, let's face it - they've got problems.

The Video Game Critic (Nov 22, 2001)
As an early Saturn title, Clockwork Knight was not a good demonstration of the system's power. Although some 3D graphics are used, the gameplay is strictly 2D, and the cutesy characters and cheesy background music can be hard to stomach. Clockwork Knight has little sense of style or personality. You could do worse I suppose, but for God's sake, try not to!
