Game Shark (Nov 09, 2009)
I can’t give a more enthusiastic endorsement than the following: I would happily have paid 60 dollars for this game, as I received more enjoyment and quality play time from it than most of this year’s big budget hits. You may not have heard of it, but you owe it to yourself to play this game.
GamingExcellence (Nov 11, 2009)
Torchlight doesn't really do anything new, per se. It's taken the dungeon-crawling genre and refined it to its best elements. The style matches the mood of the game, and a fairly interesting story put over it all as well. Replayability is there: you can move through an infinite dungeon after beating the game, or 'retire', which allows you to restart at level 1 again with another class, but hand down an item from your high-level character, but with lowered stat and level requirements. In all, Torchlight is a fun game to play. Not perfect, but still done very well, especially for such a low-priced title (around twenty dollars). Fans of dungeon crawlers are definitely going to want to check this game out.
Games Finder (May 10, 2014)
As a single player casual alternative to Diablo you can’t look past the original Torchlight, you are guaranteed to get hours of gameplay for a great price.
90 (Feb 23, 2011)
Torchlight has an awful lot going for it; a sturdy combat system, a clever dungeon mechanic and an ultimately enjoyable storyline. A lot of action RPG fans dismissed it as a Diablo Lite, only good to fill the gap until Diablo 3 comes out, but it’s not the case; Torchlight could be the next big thing.
Torchlight has an emphasis on a central plot and pays careful consideration to character, and it’s extremely polished. Despite each level being randomised they merge seamlessly into the next, and every five tiers or so down the dungeon theme changes along with the type of monster you’ll encounter, so you won’t know if your specialised skill or equipment set will be quite as effective lower down until you’ve tried. It’s gorgeous, accessible and highly addictive, and it’s a perfect solution for both causal gamers and hardcore RPG fanatics.
RPGamer (Nov 01, 2009)
In a sea of ambivalency, it's nice to see a life preserver in Torchlight floating by. While it certainly has a couple flaws, where the game stumbles isn't anywhere near enough to overcome what it does exceptionally well. In addition to being a great romp on its own, this title is also a lead-up to the Torchlight MMORPG, which will be available about two years after the launch of the single-player game. For those not interested in multiplayer this won't be a selling point, but it shouldn't detract from any enjoyment of the standalone adventure.
Cheat Code Central (Nov, 2009)
Torchlight is part of a growing market of PC games finding success with budget prices. Runic hasn't dumbed down the experience, they've removed the fluff and distilled it down to the truly fun parts. Add in a few innovations and what you've got is Torchlight; a game that raises the expectations for dungeon-crawling action RPGs by being not just fine-tuned but affordable as well.
Game Informer Magazine (Oct 29, 2009)
The one big knock on Torchlight is the lack of co-op. While this is undoubtedly a bummer, I am much happier with the polished single-player experience and no online than I would be with two half-assed elements. There are other, minor complaints that one can level – often-uninspiring loot, poor in-game documentation, and badly explained major game mechanics are all frustrating. However, the core of the game is its combat and character progression, and both of those are outstanding. Torchlight might not be breaking any new ground, but the soul of Diablo hasn't been so ably captured in years. You won't find much that approaches Torchlight's worth at its $20 price point.
86 (Nov 26, 2009)
IGN (Nov 18, 2009)
All in all, Torchlight is a refreshing - though not revolutionary - dungeon crawler that will occupy gamers for 10-15 hours on the first run-through, and perhaps dozens more across varying difficulty levels and experiments with different character classes. The story is somewhat lacking, but not overly important when garnering quests and slaying beasts. You'll quickly lose track of time whilst exploring the bowels of the town of Torchlight, which is lovely for your sense of satisfaction, but bad for the real life priorities you'll likely neglect, such as eating and paying bills. The graphics are great, the music engrossing, and the gameplay addictive. While the lack of multiplayer at first tastes bitter, the single-player campaign more than makes up for it, as you really have little to lose at the meager asking price of $20.
Hellbored (Nov 01, 2009)
Minor gripes aside, there’s no escaping just how addictive Torchlight is. It’s extremely easy to sit down intending to play for a few minutes, only to look up and see that two hours has gone by. The few balance and graphical issues really don’t detract that much from what is as solid a first release as you could hope for from a new company. Torchlight is ambitious, well-executed and, most of all, some of the best fun PC gamers can get for the price.
Gamer Limit (Nov 03, 2009)
Aside from the story falling flat on its face, very limited character selection, and the absence of multiplayer, Torchlight is an exhilarating action RPG that does everything else exceptionally well. The artwork and music are stellar, the flow is just right, and so is the price; you can’t beat $19.95 for a brand new game. And one of its best functions: it will play on almost any PC and even has a notebook mode. What are you waiting for? Go get your copy off Steam or right now!
PC Games (Germany) (Apr 06, 2010)
From an appropriateness standpoint, there is magic in this game, it’s hard not to use it. I was disappointed by the female outfits, as I never found armor that would full cover my character’s legs or torso. By default the game does have blood splatters, but it can be disabled. It almost goes without saying that you'll be destroying lots of monsters and minions.
Game Observer (Dec 02, 2009)
Takes the best of every Action RPG and glues it all together to make a supremely polished and unusually addictive roguelike game, that’s unfortunately also too easy.
83 (Nov 12, 2009)
Gameplay (Benelux) (Nov 27, 2009)
Waarom wachten op Diablo III? Deze game is waarschijnlijk beter! (Waarschuwing! Straffe uitspraak gedetecteerd! Vernietig AWVS!)
Hooked Gamers (Nov 01, 2009)
To call this game a Diablo clone would be an understatement. Torchlight takes place in a solitary town with an ever expanding, randomly generated dungeon. It features magic potions, town portals, randomly generated loot drops, and tons of enemies that require an excessive amount of mouse clicking. The game is not original in any way but it is a ton of fun. The game is offered at a budget price of $19.99 which might give punters undue pause as Torchlight is worth every cent, and then some.
GameTrailers (Nov, 2009)
Torchlight applies a smooth and modern design to a time-tested concept. The result is successfully crafted and eminently playable dungeon crawler at the attractive price of 20 bucks. The one downer is the puzzling lack of online play. If other titles on the market aren't satisfying your urge to level up and amass a towering hoard of loot, there's a lot to be gained from going at it solo in Torchlight's dungeons.
Mana Pool (Aug 29, 2010)
So does Torchlight actually do anything new that other games haven’t done already? Not really – besides from some clever little design elements like the pets, Torchlight is just another hack and slash dungeon crawler. It’s an incredibly simple game, with a relatively short main story as well. Surprisingly though, it’s also an incredible lot of FUN. This is the main ingredient often missing in games like this, and since Torchlight runs on practically any machine and is relatively inexpensive (can be purchased for under £10 on Amazon), I would highly recommend you give it a go.
82 PC Gaming (Dec 10, 2009)
There isn't that much left to stay except that this is a game that does hack and slash real justice and it’s a the perfect choice for those eagerly waiting the release of Diablo 3. In fact, if Torchlight came with a more involved single-player campaign, had multiplayer and didn't rely on random level generation, it would have been a real threat to Blizzard's long awaited sequel. As it stands now, it’s more of a tease for fans who will have an even harder time waiting after getting such a satisfying taste of what Diablo 3 could (and I’m sure, will) bring.
Legendra (Jul 04, 2010)

Thunderbolt Games (Jan 07, 2010)
Torchlight has something unique going for it. There’s a certain simplicity to the game that is refreshing. It’s not only a digestible budget priced game, but it also retains all the important qualities of a full-priced release, excluding the upcoming free Massively Multiplayer component. Carrying the influence of several ex-Blizzard executives, some having oversight in the development of the first couple Diablo titles, Torchlight comes into its own as a recommended purchase and a good placeholder for Diablo III.
I very much enjoyed my excursion into Torchlight. Even though I normally don’t care much for Diablo Clones, this game is both well made and fun. Despite a few minor problems it is definitely a solid title. Having low system requirements, it will run on most computers and it also costs a mere $20, which makes it impossible to not recommend it. If you enjoyed games like Diablo, Nox, or Dungeon Siege then Torchlight is definitely for you. For those looking for a nice inexpensive gift this holiday season, consider getting it for your gamer friends. Chances are it will be greatly appreciated!
GamersGlobal (Nov 01, 2009)
Game Over Online (Nov 03, 2009)
As a guy who mostly gravitates towards the more involved RPGs (NWN, KOTOR, and I’m seriously looking forward to the upcoming Dragon Age – Origins, etc), I still enjoy the sort of low-brain-impact action presented by Torchlight. Pick it up, click your way through a few quests leaving a literal trail of dead creatures in your wake, spread out some skill points, quit and go on with your day. Or get hooked by it until the sun comes up, which is really the more likely result. Torchlight is proof positive that it’s often the simplest games that can be the most addictive.
Giant Bomb (Nov 03, 2009)
Runic's Diablo-like debut drills straight down to the core of what makes a great dungeon-crawling loot grind.
GameSpy (Nov 10, 2009)
At twenty dollars, Torchlight is a remarkable value. If you're looking for a challenge, try out the higher difficulties and hardcore mode; if you want a more casual loot-gathering experience, set it on normal and you can focus on just picking up shiny stuff with little grief. The randomly generated maps and impressive loot variety make it so that you'll still be entertained plumbings its depths after retiring your characters a second and third time, thanks to the never-ending supply of dungeons and an open-source approach that has already been embraced by mod-makers. If you're desperately waiting for Diablo III, go ahead and whet your appetite with Torchlight. You won't regret it.
Totally Gaming Network (Oct 30, 2009)
As briefly mentioned earlier, Torchlight is essentially Runic Games’ foot in the door to the world of gaming, and the introduction to their forthcoming MMORPG in the same universe. That said, this incarnation of Torchlight certainly has the goods to stand on its own, and is definitely worth the $20 on Steam.
80 (Oct 29, 2009)
80 (UK) (Nov 05, 2009)
So, it's the best Diablolike since Diablo II, and a very real rival to the upcoming (at an unspecified point, God-blinking-dammit) Diablo III. Even though there is nothing new or truly unique about Torchlight, nothing at all, that it so confidently and prettily takes the fight to Blizzard is an enormous compliment about how well put-together this is. Yeah, it gets old pretty fast - but it's also only £15. You'll definitely get your money's worth. And that's even before the MMO stuff turns up. But, by Christ, my hands hurt, and my brain is squealing for stimulation. I've had a whale of a time, largely - but I desperately would not want to put my body through these few days of unblinking kill'n'collect again any time soon.
GameSpot (Oct 29, 2009)
And there are even a couple of "wait, there's more" kickers. Along with being one of the best action RPGs to hit the PC in many moons, Torchlight is selling for just $19.95, and it comes with absurdly undemanding system requirements along with a netbook mode so that you can play it on just about any system. So not only do you get a great game, but you get a great deal in every respect. Stop reading and start playing.
78 (Nov 04, 2009)
AusGamers (Nov 04, 2009)
The game itself has its flaws, which hamper the overall game as a single-player experience. For one the main town is fairly rudimentary with fairly generic NPCs that dispense quests as simple as the premise. Kill this guy on Floor 6, now kill this guy on Floor 7, now how about we try something different and get you to kill this guy on Floor 8? In the end this means that Torchlight coasts on its gameplay mechanics which are incredibly well realised and polished. With such a small development team, the focus for this game seems pretty clear, and that was to create a great action-RPG in the vein of Diablo and Fate that plays every bit as well as those classics. The end result is essentially just that. Expect one that is missing a great storyline, an interesting cast of secondary characters, and co-operative gameplay. Sure you may have three pieces of an awesome purple armour set, but without someone to show them off too, who's going to know?
Adventure Corner (Jul 21, 2010)
Impulse Gamer (Nov, 2009)
I do recommend this game to those that simply love the traditional role-playing story. I also suggest it as a good starter game for those who have just been introduced to the genre and aren’t quite ready for the over elaborate UI systems that most RPGs tend to have.
Computer Bild Spiele (Nov 30, 2009)
