Biography edit · view history
In 1977, when Peter Chan was in grade school, his father brought home a Star Wars magazine – that's when Peter discovered the collaborative role of being a concept artist for films. He grew up fascinated by the idea and wanted to learn more. Peter studied illustration and advertising in San Francisco before arriving at LucasArts Entertainment Company as a lead artist in 1991. He designed many of their adventure games, such as Monkey Island 2, Day of the Tentacle, Full Throttle and Grim Fandango. With some introspection, Peter decided to leave his corporate "too good to be true" job after three years to move to San Juan Island in Washington State to launch his freelance career.
Peter's work expanded to the film industry beginning with DreamWorks' first animated film, ANTZ. He was soon involved in other films, including Star Wars: Episode One, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, Rio, and Monsters University. Peter's job continues to alternate between games and films, as a visual development artist and occasionally, a storyboard artist. Once a year, Peter is an instructor at The Animation Workshop school in Denmark, where sharing his art knowledge is a gratifying and humbling experience. He has also contributed artwork to the Totoro Forest Project to raise funds to save the Sayama Forest, and participated in the "Mary Blair: A Life's Choice" exhibition hosted by Studio Ghibli.
Peter enjoys traveling with his family and meditating while stacking firewood. He strives to find the right balance between work life and family life.
