Overview
Founded in 1975, Microsoft has become the biggest name in home entertainment and business software. From the most used operating systems in the world (Windows 95, 98, 2000, XP) to Word, Excel, Visual Basic, Office and Access.
Microsoft has also become a major contributor to video games software in the PC market since the mid 90's, with publishing rights to
MechWarrior,
Age of Empires,
Dungeon Siege and
Flight Simulator.
Microsoft entered the home video games console market in 2001 with the Xbox.
The moniker Microsoft Game Studios was introduced in 2002 for products developed in-house or as first-party software for the Xbox console. Next to the original development teams, Microsoft also set up or acquired a number of studios, such as
Bungie,
Carbonated Games,
Ensemble,
FASA Interactive,
Lionhead,
Rare,
Turn 10 and
Wingnut Interactive.
Between 2007 and 2009 the company lost or closed four of its development studios:
