I was looking forward to checking out Cursed to Golf from the moment it was announced, and I’m happy to report that this is definitely one of the year’s highlights on Nintendo Switch. The gameplay is easy to get the hang of, and the roguelike elements don’t overwhelm the game experience. As you learn from your mistakes, buy more Ace Cards and store them in the card binder, you’ll start to progress further and further into the game until you can find the right combination of elements to finally ascend.

Cursed to Golf accomplishes something that many indie golf games don't - it manages to be different. Not only that, the controls are smooth, the art is clean and it all cultimates to a golf game that stands out amongst the crowd. Cursed to Golf is an indie gem through-and-through.

Cursed to Golf is a unique experience and one that was very fun to play out. The trailer sold me on the game, and after getting a chance to take it for a spin on PlayStation 5, I’m here to report that the game certainly delivers. It’s not an easy game, but it does offer a challenging but fair experience.

Every aspect of Cursed to Golf comes together to form a truly special and unique game. With its simple hook, brilliantly designed levels, huge suite of dynamic abilities, and a finely balanced roguelike structure, Cursed to Golf is a constant delight. There have been many great games released in 2022 so far, but Cursed to Golf is easily at the top of my list at this moment. It's one of the best golf games ever made, but you don't have to like golf to enjoy the curse of being forced to play it.

Cursed to Golf is a brilliant little golf game. Its smart design encourages creativity, and its roguelike elements, while harsh, aren’t brutal enough to derail the experience. It’s astonishing how well the individual parts from different genres mix into a cohesive whole—or should I say “hole”? More than anything, though, it’s just fun. That’s all there is to it: it’s just a fun game that deserves your attention.

Hooked Gamers (8.7 out of 10) (87%)

The game uses the golf word par to give a number of how many shots a hole has to be completed in. In reality using the word par in place of number of shots allowed is a misnomer because completing a hole under par carries no benefit. That might just be the developers way of making the game be more golf like. However, even though Cursed to Golf really isn't a sports game or a game of real golf, it does hold a whole lot of value when it comes to fun. The graphics aren't the latest and greatest but the feeling of accomplishment of actually negotiating your way past each level is worth the price of admission. It's also worth a bunch of satisfaction knowing that you indeed did escape purgatory, finally!

Masochismo o no ù difficile stabilirlo, fatto sta che Cursed to Golf ù senz'altro capace di farsi amare e odiare allo stesso tempo.

Cursed to Golf is an extremely compelling, if also unforgiving, game. It succeeds at being an incredibly unique take on both the rogue-like and 2D golf formulas. The difficulty may be off putting to some, though, and an argument can be made that it would be better off with some adjustments made in that department. That being said, it is hard to deny the underlying quality and charm that this game exudes with every swing of the club. Cursed to Golf is a big deal for relative newcomer developer Chuhai Labs. While the studio has developed and published several titles and their lineage can be traced back through multiple companies well represented on Nintendo platforms, Cursed to Golf may very well be the game that puts them on the map.

Cursed to Golf is nice because while it has many roguelike elements, it doesn’t inspire the same level of anxiety to progress as other roguelikes. The game putting the choice of difficulty complete in the hands of the player is a nice touch and lets you pick your own risk and reward. Cursed To Golf is an original take on golf with charming 16-bit characters and environments that also hide a lot of devious shenanigans beneath the surface. The combination of long runs, deflating feeling that came with defeat, and the list of issues I’ve mentioned throughout meant that once I finally beat the last boss, I lost any incentive to complete more runs. It doesn’t have the run/build variety or shorter playtimes I look for in a roguelike. The mix of genres is a good one, as is the game itself; I just don’t see myself playing it anymore now that it’s done.

Cursed to Golf puts a unique twist on the golf formula. Combine that with a charming aesthetic, and the combination makes for a good time for the right audience. Unfortunately, it doesn't go enough into that twist and relies heavily on the game of golf to carry the day. Then making the game of golf into a rogue-like further specifies the fanbase. While a fun spin on a beloved sport, it still requires a lot of love of the sport to stick with it.

Much like its cursed chibi protagonist, Cursed to Golf is stuck in a sort of purgatory. Its unique mix of golf and roguelike mechanics, sublime soundtrack, and charming style ram up against its sometimes unfair difficulty and handful of questionable design decisions. This collision of relatively high highs and frustrating lows results in a game that is caught in this intermediary state between greatness and mediocrity, never committing to one side for too long yet still favoring the former. Cursed to Golf may hit a few into the bunker, but still manages to come in exactly par.

Cursed to Golf is a great idea for a game. It’s a very difficult 2D golf game with precise controls.

If you’re a golf fanatic and you like quirky indie games, Cursed to Golf might be the game for you. The visuals are solid, the gameplay is overall well-designed, and even the music is rather catchy. But starting over at the very beginning with no real changes in your abilities is a real drag that will turn off a fair number of players. Temper your expectations and remember that this cutesy golf game conceals a remarkably challenging game that will test both your golf skills and your patience. If you’re still in for a shot, go for it. There’s a great game hiding here behind a few questionable gameplay decisions and hopefully some players really enjoy themselves!

Nerd Stash, The N/A

Ultimately, Cursed to Golf is an enjoyable and exciting game that will deliver a level of challenge to players with a roguelike game design and basic true golf gameplay. Unfortunately, the repetitive soundtrack and roguelike elements sometimes felt like it was holding the rest of the game back. Still, polished gameplay, a gorgeous art style, and high replay value make this game an easy recommendation.

Even with Cursed to Golf’s punishing difficulty, I’ve found myself getting closer and closer to the vaunted 18th hole on each run, with no desire to stop until I’ve reclaimed my mortality. It’s a testament to the craft of developer Chuhai Labs, which was willing to take such risks with such a proven formula that I haven’t stopped even after several punishing deaths. And I won’t stop until I finally remove this dreaded albatross from my neck.

If you’re looking for a fresh new roguelike with that challenge then Cursed to Golf will keep you busy for many gaming nights to come. Not a hole in one but far from a boogey.

The cute-looking and sounding package is a lot tougher than you might think, so be prepared. But if rogue-likes (or as the devs call it
Golf Like) interest you, give this one a swing. Cursed to Golf is trying to do something new in a genre that can feel overwhelming at times, and it succeeds. It’s challenging, charming, funny, and just overall a blast to play.

Its roguelike elements and course designs feel like a swing and a miss, but Cursed To Golf has plenty of visual charm and is a fun throwback to Flash-era golfing games of bygones past.

At the moment, I’m still stuck in the part of Cursed to Golf where escape feels impossible. I’m not sure I’ll ever get out. I feel like a golfer stuck in a bunker, only moving the ball forward a few inches with each unsuccessful shot. That very well might be the point — this is purgatory after all. Put aside the hope of escaping and you’ve got a fun 2D golf game that playfully amps up the high-stakes nature of the game. Just try not to break your controller over your leg in frustration in the process.

By trying to merge golf into a roguelike without compromising either idea, Chuhai Labs have created a mean game that’s simply confused on what it wants to be. Is it a repetitious, randomized roguelike that rewards a player’s persistence, or an optimized golf simulator that promotes patience and planning? It’s not really either one, instead standing in the middle of the two options: a golf game that simultaneously wants you to be efficient with your swings while also taking as many as possible. And if you really want to get out of hell, you will be swinging a lot. To that I only have two things to say: Godspeed and fore!

Entertainium N/A

Cursed to Golf has such good aesthetics, and is based on such a fundamentally sound idea, that all of this could be forgivable – and some, no doubt, will relish the challenge. The roguelike structure, though, means that these frustrations have to be endured over and over again. Unlike, say, Nuclear Throne or Into the Breach, the game lacks the smooth and addictive core gameplay to make that feel worthwhile. It’s for that reason that despite taking a strong first shot, Cursed to Golf ultimately ends up feeling under par.
