You'll need a 100mhz Pentium with a decent video card to truly enjoy the SVGA mode of EF2000 at an acceptable frame rate. However, if upgrading your system is rewarded by games like EF2000 that show off your latest investment, let the high-requirement games roll in! This game is so groundbreaking that it's obvious why Ocean released EF2000 with a few glitches, which were later corrected with their "mid-life upgrade" patch. If this is an example of what the future holds for us flight jocks, the future is looking very bright.

Well I think its time to bury your copy of Falcon 3.0 in the backyard. It's really about time something came along to beat it solidly, my install disks for Falcon are 5.25" floppies! The *ONE* thing that EF2000 doesnt have that Falcon does is modem play. EF2000 has network play (up to 8 players) but they skimped on the modem play. Hopefully t his will be coming up in a future patch or upgrade. However, for the time being EF2000 is THE definative flight sim. It might get some upcoming competition from Jetfighter 3, but when that will be out is anyone's guess. Anyway, if you are a flight sim fan , and you've got the horsepower, GET THIS GAME. What else can I say?

"EF-2000" is the best Flight simulator to date I have ever had the pleasure to play. The game is so immersive, that when you play it, the real world around you ceases to exist. From taxing to the runway, to touch-down the game has a profound effect on you, flak bursting in the air shaking the plane to turbulence caused by rising hot gasses between mountains to the beautifully detailed resolution at 640 x 400. This flight sim has rejuvenated my faith in the Flight sim market and the abilities of Sim programmers out there. As I also mentioned before, "EF-2000" will run on a 486, but it really is a good idea to have a Pentium. If you need an excuse to upgrade, look at "EF-2000" in 640 x 400. The patch, although a minor drawback will be here soon and I'll leave it up to you to decide whether companies should release unfinished software, but from the pleasure I've had in it's current form, it's fine by me.

If you've never flown the virtual skies then now is the perfect chance to begin. If, on the other hand, you're a veteran armchair pilot then TFX: EF2000 will provide literally hours of dogfighting entertainment. Quite simply an essential PC purchase.

Du grand DID !

Despite these minor problems, EF2000 is an amazing accomplishment. The astonishing graphics, the best virtual cockpit around, and a target-rich environment more than make up for a perhaps overly ambitious campaign module. You'll need powerful hardware: a 486-66 is probably the minimum for getting a playable frame rate in low-rest, and you'll definitely want a fast Pentium for SVGA mode. (I found it playable smooth at full detail on Pentium-100). Like the real plane, EF2000 is a splendid example of the future that better technology has in store for us. And a bright future it is.

EF2000 is the perfect balance of total modern air combat atmosphere, visuals, and sounds that can only be compared to the likes of US Navy Fighters Gold & Silent Thunder Alpha in overall feel of the environment, and the realism of EF2000 simulating the flight model of the actual Eurofighter 2000 almost as well as SSI’s Su-27 simulates the flight model of the actual Su-27 Flanker!. If you’re and don’t mind the rather dreary and pretty dark visuals then I strongly suggest you go for it!

With multi-player options, graphics to die for and a formidable campaign mode, EF2000 is simply stunning. There are no fancy frills, no full-motion video and no pretty cut scenes: just 100 percent flight simulation. Anything you say about it is always an understatement, so just give in and enjoy it.

Overall, EF2000 is a solid and overwhelmingly satisfying combat simulator. Not only do you get the chance to fly a futuristic battle plane before the real pilots do, but you also have beautiful scenery to view while you zoom to combat areas. If you have the time and patience to learn EF2000, you won't be disappointed.

EF-2000 is a marvellous flying game for the next generation Pentiums, but not even near the Falcon killer they boasted it would be. Nice to have skyscrapers and mountains in Helsinki...

Chtěli jste špičkový letový simulátor, realistický, věrný, přesný, propracovaný, zkrátka - profi simulátor? Pak všechny výtky stranou. Tedy - pokud máte OPRAVDU RYCHLÝ počítač. EF 2000 uspokojí vás všechny, kteří nestojí o prezentaci, atmosféru ani hru - vás, kteří chcete létat, létat a létat.

Of course, all this entertainment requires a beefy PC to do it justice. 486 owners had better start thinking Pentium, and the more RAM, the better. But at least EF2000 puts that horsepower to good use.

The Wild Black Yonder

The Good
DID prided themselves on their accurate flight models and striking graphics, and EF2000 was one of the first titles to include a useful 'padlock view' (a feature pioneered in the company's previous game, 'TFX'). EF2000 is still good to look at today, helped by the decision to set the game in the bleak snowy wastelands of northern Norway. The sky is generally very dark and moody, and the sensation of being locked in an air-conditioned box, floating in a freezing black wilderness is quite unique. In common with the last two 'Falcon' games, 'European Air War' and sadly very few others, EF2000 had a dynamic campaign in which your actions had bearing on subsequent missions. The simulation engine was complicated enough to be satisfying but not so complicated as to inspire panic, whilst the sensation of flying at great speed through narrow, glacial canyons - with time advance on, of course - was as close to the end of 'Firefox' as any computer game has come. Note that a patch exists to provide for functionality with 3D cards.

The Bad
DID's games always had two huge flaws which are present here. Firstly, the manual is awful, explaining in detail what each control and MFD screen is, but not what it does or why you might want to use it. Much is written about the theory of dropping laser-guided bombs, but nothing explains how this is achieved in the game. Several key commands and much information were also left out. Secondly, the game is full of bugs and omissions, even with the various patches which were released (this came at a time when patches were quite unusual). Without the patch, the only way to see how many weapons your plane had was to pop up one of the external views; there was no way to load specific weapons in advance; it was never explained how to finish a mission, so that you spent a lot of time flying around on patrol, landing back at base, and... sitting on the runway, with the mission continuing (the answer was to use one of the time-advance controls, but this was never explained). The existence of a separate add-on pack, TACTCOM, to provide for internet and extra functionality suggests that DID needed more time, although the majority of their games are flawed in similar ways, including this game's recent sequel. In fairness, the real-world EF2000 has been beset by problems as well.

The Bottom Line
This game is quite hard to find nowadays; Ocean Software no longer exist, indeed both DID and Infrogrammes seem to have vanished (the latter rebranded as Atari). It was available for a time in a two-pack with TACTCOM, although Falcon 4.0 makes it obsolete, bar the moody scenery. A sequel, Eurofighter Typhoon, was released to little impact in 2001 and is now available as an ultra-cheap budget game.
