Biography edit · view history

Joel Hochberg (December 30, 1935 - April 18, 2023) was President of the coin-operated amusement business Rare Coin-it Inc based in Miami. He helped the young Nolan Bushnell launch the original Pong. When British microcomputers became popular he forged a bond with Chris and Tim Stamper. They left Sinclair Research Co. to form Ultimate Play the Game.

Hochberg handled all the business affairs of the company while Tim and Chris developed the games. He had longstanding relationships with Nintendo and approached Nintendo executive Minoru Arakawa to arrange a meeting for the Stampers to present their demos. This eventually lead to the establishment of Rare Ltd. to develop for Nintendo and Ultimate Play the Game was eventually sold to U.S. Gold. Rare went on to become a valued and prolific software partner of Nintendo, starting with the Famicom / NES.
