All told, Sonic CD was a masterpiece long before it appeared on the App Store. This wonderful mobile version only helps solidify its standing as one of the greatest video games of all time.

Sonic CD is one of those few cases where I can recommend buying both the smartphone version and the console version. It’s not due to superior console visuals or exclusive features in each, but simply because this game is too good to leave at home. You’d be hard-pressed to find a more replayable pocket platformer, even at higher price points.

Sonic CD is everything we could want in a port of a Sonic game. The graphics are bright and gorgeous on Retina display devices, and the game runs with a silky smooth frame rate. They even nailed the controls to the point where it hardly feels like you're using a touchscreen. If you’ve ever enjoyed a Sonic game on any platform, Sonic CD is a Must Have.

For those of you eagerly awaiting Sonic 4: Episode II, listen up. SEGA is promoting Sonic CD as the direct prequel to Sonic 4. So not only is this a super fun Sonic game for XBLA, it potentially offers tips about SEGA’s upcoming projects. That’s two reasons to get it, I shouldn’t have to give you a third.

Basically, I love this game. And I love it in a way that both fans and Sonic CD newcomers should be able to love it too. Fans will love the care and attention given to the conversion of one of the all-time great Sonic games. Newbies will share the same journey I just had, discovering a gem of a platformer that's been buried in obscurity for far too long. It's still relevant and only the ultra-hardcore level design is likely to put gamers off. If it does, go back to Sonic 2 instead - it's far simpler.

If this is all that's changed, then why all the excitement? I'll tell you why: Sonic CD is a great game. I paid $300 for an attachment and $50 for the game back in the early '90s to see Sonic at his best. Now all you need is $5 and a few minutes for a file download. Sega could have easily charged twice as much for this much-loved classic.

And finally, of course, there’s that most iffy of subjects; pricing. Far be it for us to consider a game’s monetary value as determining its worth, but with this title its impossible to ignore, if only by contrast to the cheeky cost commanded by Sega’s other conversions. At the price of a fast-food meal Sonic CD is a bafflingly good value. Whether Sega has had a Dickensian change of heart in their pricing of re-releases or whether they have more cynical motives we cannot be certain, but either way we dare not complain. Whether you’re already a fan of Sonic CD will probably determine whether you intend to purchase this release or not, but Sega have succeeded in adding just enough tweaks and extras to convert the unconvinced. Conversions simply don’t get any better than this and we can only hope that Sonic CD might represent the new rule for Sega’s future handling of its old properties, rather than the long overdue exception.

Pretty much the only issue with Sonic CD is the controls; the d-pad is kind of small, but that’s about it. The game holds up really well, and its relative scarcity in terms of re-releases makes it only that much more special now. Plus, the reworked engine makes the game feel just like it did back in the halcyon days of 1993, unlike other emulated titles that are exact replications of their original titles. Anyone who’s a fan of the 16-bit era, and especially those who haven’t played this gem yet. The love and work that went into this game is impressive.

Sonic CD is a labor of love, and for fans, it is a chance to finally play this often talked-about game. If you enjoy classic Sonic games, this is a must own. The amount of polish that went into it is impressive, especially for the low price tag. Sega may have soiled Sonic’s name in previous years, but after Generations and now this, I think he is back on the right track to glory.

It's an absolute joy to see Sonic CD, easily Sonic's most neglected and maligned entry, sanctified with an earnest port that not only properly integrates Sonic CD onto modern hardware, but technically transforms the game to perform objectively better than its original form. Sonic CD's obtuse level design and time travel gimmick remain as divisive as ever, but for $5 it's easy to pull the trigger for fans and newcomers alike.

Despite a few minor issues, Sonic CD is among the more impressive retro ports seen on modern platforms. Not only is the game faithful to the original, but it's also just plain better in many ways. And at a mere 400 Microsoft points ($5 US), it's a tremendous value to boot. If you remember Sonic CD fondly, there's no better way to enjoy one of the most treasured games in the series. And if you missed out on this one entirely before now, this is a superlative way to experience a beloved classic for the very first time.

Sonic CD's overall package is bare-bones, with the option for the original Japanese music and a time trial mode being the only notable additions to the game, but with the tiny price point (only 400 MS points) it's an easy thing to forgive. I would have really liked to see something new, like maybe a low-end overhaul of the graphics as an option, but having the different layers there are fine (though minor). Thankfully, though, all of the animations are here—including that kickass "Sonic Boom" opening number—and the game is even smoother than I remember on my SCD. Need a speedrun through the past? This doesn't just fit the bill—it flies through it like a dine-and-dash.

Whoops, I’ve run on a bit too long for a digital port of an old game. Suffice it to say, this is one of the top-quality Sonic games, even if it’s a bit weirder and a bit patchier. The lack of slickness ends up being a positive — this is a game that’ll stick in your memory, and encourage you to keep coming back to it. Like Sonic? You’ll like this one.

However, there is no doubt that this is the definitive version of a little-known, much-loved title. Sega's humility in collaborating with Whitehead, and artistry in bringing the game's strengths to the fore, is a striking achievement in 2011. For that reason, for the first time in a long time Sega, deserves its richest asset - and for the first time in a long time, those fans deserve Sega.

Sonic CD is not the perfect Sonic game many people remember it being, but Sonic CD on the Retro Engine is the new gold standard to which all future 16-bit ports will surely be held. It strikes the perfect balance between old and new. Fans of the original will be pleased to find that their beloved Sonic CD remains intact with all the bells and whistles (and more), and newcomers will appreciate the game as an example of proper retro gaming implemented on modern consoles. I'd gladly buy Sonic 2, 3, and Sonic & Knuckles for the millionth time (with lock-on, of course) if they’re running on the Retro Engine. We’d finally be able to forget all about those Backbone ports. The future looks bright.
